Philadelphia police are investigating the predawn heist of ground beef worth approximately $40,000 from a tractor-trailer in Northeast Philadelphia.

Shortly before 3:45 a.m. Tuesday on the 2800 block of Southampton Road, three men broke open the rear doors of a white 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer and stole four pallets of ground beef, police said.

The driver was asleep in the truck, police said.

The men then loaded the ground beef into three vehicles and fled in an unknown direction, police said.

The theft was captured on video, police said.

Last month, masked thieves stole half a pallet of Black Angus beef ribs from a tractor-trailer overnight in the Food Distribution Center area of South Philadelphia, police said.

In recent years, large cargo thefts have increased in frequency around the Philadelphia region.
