Thirty-Three The Hard Way ...

The Phillies' worst 33-game records.

Thanks to the fine folks (and the giant searchable database) at baseball-reference.com, researching how historically bad the Phillies are this season is so much easier than the old (pre-Internet) days ... For instance ...

After Monday's loss, the Phils are 11-22 after 33 games for just the third time in the last 54 seasons (1962-2015) ... However, they were at least that bad through 33 games 19 times in their first 79 seasons of existence (1883-1961).

Below, chronologically, are the Phillies' 32 seasons in which they started at least as bad as they have in 2015.

NOTABLE:

♦ This is the 10th time in 133 seasons that the Phillies are exactly 11-22 through 33 games.

♦ They have had worse records through 33 games 12 times in those 133 seasons.

♦ Only one of those 22 Phillies teams finished the season at .500 (1955, 77-77). None of the others finished any better than 16 games under .500.

♦ Six times (most recently 1945-46) the Phillies started this badly in consecutive seasons ... And one of those was for three straight years (1933-34-35).

♦ The worst 33-game start in Phillies history is 6-26-1 put up by the 1904 club.

♦ The worst 33-game start by any major league team since 1914 is the 4-29 by the 1988 Baltimore Orioles.
