Kurant Cider to set up shop in Fishtown

Joe Getz and Michael Meyers, now renting brewing space at Perkasie's Free Will Brewing Co., have leased a 19th-century former garage at 436 E. Girard Ave.

Fishtown - in the throes of a brewing boom - will get a cidery this year.

How about dem apples?

Joe Getz and Michael Meyers of Kurant Cider, now renting brewing space at Perkasie's Free Will Brewing Co., have leased a 19th-century former garage at 436 E. Girard Ave. (between Palmer and Earl Streets).

Getz, 33, says they will begin construction soon on what they're calling a test kitchen and taproom that will also serve Pennsylvania wines, beers, and spirits. The Fishtown location, pegged for an August opening, will include a small (3- to 5-bbl) brewing system, as the main work will continue in Bucks County.

Getz and Meyers, also 33, met when Getz approached Meyers to buy brewing equipment from a scuttled brewing project. Getz, who works for Keystone Homebrew Supply, said wanted to turn pro after eight or nine years home-brewing starting with a kit he received for Christmas.

They had been looking in Fishtown because "I'm there all the time," Getz said. "There's a great collaborative environment there."

The neighborhood, meanwhile, has several beer projects brewing. Fishtown Brewpub is looking at a late-April opening in an old elevator factory at 1100 Frankford Ave. (on the corner of Wildey Street and across from Barcade). Evil Genius' brewery/tasting room is well under construction at 1727 N. Front St., near Columbia Avenue. Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. is supposedly working on a taproom at 957 Frankford Ave., across from the Fillmore.
