Doctors and other medical staff at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will get advice this morning on how to be more sensitive and helpful to adolescents struggling with their gender identity.
The guest speaker is an expert: Jennifer Finney Boylan, who chronicled her transition from male to female in the 2003 book She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders.
Last month, Boylan published her latest book, I'm Looking Through You, a memoir about growing up in a haunted house, and about what it means to feel haunted.
Boylan, a professor of creative writing and American literature at Colby College since 1988, grew up in the Newtown Square area.
She has said she wishes she felt safe as a child to talk to her pediatrician about being transgendered.
