Did off-duty Philly cop shoot his son intentionally?

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer shot his 19-year-old son Monday night during a scuffle inside the officer's Northeast Philadelphia home, Commissioner Richard Ross said Tuesday.

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer shot his 19-year-old son Monday night during a scuffle inside the officer's Northeast Philadelphia home, Commissioner Richard Ross said Tuesday.

Investigators were working to answer a number of questions, including whether the officer pulled the trigger intentionally, or if the gun accidentally went off during the tussle, Ross said.

"It is our belief that the father pulled the trigger, but we don't know if it was done accidentally or intentionally," Ross said. "Those are the things we need to find out."

It happened about 6:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Taunton Street. Ross said he was not sure how the argument began or what it was about, but said two shots were fired from the officer's personal firearm and the son was hit once in the abdomen.

The teen was in critical but stable condition at Aria Health-Torresdale Campus; the officer and two others inside the home at the time were uninjured, Ross said.

The commissioner declined to name the officer, but sources identified him as Dorion Young, a 24-year veteran assigned to the 15th District.

Rosanne Mauro, who lives across the street from Young, said she learned of the shooting when police cars rushed onto the block. She said Young is well-liked in the neighborhood.

"Any one of my neighbors would say he's a good guy, a decent guy," Mauro said.

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, no one had been charged in the shooting, which was being investigated by Internal Affairs. The officer, who Ross said had already been on desk duty because of a previous injury, will remain off the street during the investigation.
