NEW YORK - In his first career start, New York third baseman Eduardo Nunez drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and the bullpen patched together six stellar innings in a victory over Seattle.

Relievers Chad Gaudin, Boone Logan (1-0), and David Robertson helped get the ball to Mariano Rivera, who allowed a run in the ninth while getting four outs for his 25th save.

Ichiro Suzuki hit a pair of homers and Russell Branyan belted one of the longest ever at the new Yankee Stadium, but it wasn't enough for Jason Vargas (9-6), who packaged two shaky innings around a string of 15 consecutive outs.

Jorge Posada hit a two-run homer and Robinson Cano added a pair of RBIs against the young lefthander.

BALTIMORE - Rookie Josh Bell hit his first two major-league home runs, part of an unprecedented long-ball barrage against Cliff Lee that carried Baltimore past slumping Texas.

Ty Wigginton and Luke Scott also connected against Lee, who never before yielded four homers in a game.

The lefthander has given up 13 home runs this season - seven against Baltimore.

Lee (10-7) had gone five starts since July 22 without surrendering a homer. He allowed a career-high-tying eight runs, 10 hits, and a walk in 52/3 innings.

DETROIT - Max Scherzer beat an AL Central opponent for the first time in 10 tries this season, pitching Detroit past Cleveland.

Scherzer (9-9) allowed two or fewer runs for the fifth straight start. He gave up one earned run and four hits in seven innings, striking out eight.

Don Kelly homered and Austin Jackson doubled, singled, and scored twice for the Tigers.

Phil Coke pitched a perfect eighth for the Tigers, and Jose Valverde closed for his 24th straight successful save.

Rookie Josh Tomlin (1-3) allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings.

The Tigers led, 2-1, after a messy first inning that saw the teams combine for three errors and a run-scoring wild pitch.

Shin-Soo Choo reached on a two-out error by Tigers second baseman Will Rhymes, stole second, and scored when rightfielder Brennan Boesch dropped Travis Hafner's sinking liner for another error.

Detroit tied the game in the bottom half on Ryan Raburn's RBI double. Raburn later scored the go-ahead run on Tomlin's wild pitch.

Royals 6, White Sox 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, then delivered a two-out single in the 11th that gave Kansas City a win over Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader.

Betancourt's third grand slam of the season tied a Royals record set by Danny Tartabull in 1988. Betancourt and Alex Rodriguez are the only major-leaguers with three slams this season.

Wilson Betemit drew a leadoff walk from rookie Chris Sale (0-1) in the 11th, moved up on Alex Gordon's sacrifice, and stopped at third on Mike Aviles' two-out single. Betancourt's single to center won it.

Jesse Chavez (2-1), the fourth Kansas City pitcher, worked two scoreless innings to earn the victory.

White Sox starter Freddy Garcia held the Royals to four hits and one run - Betemit's leadoff homer in the fifth - through six innings.

In the seventh, Garcia walked Billy Butler and gave up two-out singles to Willie Bloomquist and Aviles. Sergio Santos relieved Garcia and gave up Betancourt's grand slam on his second pitch.

The White Sox threatened in the 10th, but pinch-runner Brent Lillibridge was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Carlos Quentin's double to right-center.

Royals righthander Phil Humber, making his first big-league start since Sept. 26, 2007, with the New York Mets, allowed five runs on nine hits, while striking out six in 52/3 innings.

Humber had not pitched since a relief appearance on Aug. 10. He was primarily a starter this season with Triple-A Omaha.
