After 41 years as an emergency room doctor at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden, Al Sacchetti’s final day was last week.
His patients, colleagues, and family celebrated with confetti, signs, and some tears after his last shift.
But his departure wasn’t by choice.
He is one of more than 20 people — the majority of his emergency department team — who are exiting the hospital after Virtua Health switched staffing providers.
Sacchetti and two other ER leaders said they were not offered contracts with the new provider but were offered positions at other Virtua hospitals that they declined. Other employees received offers to stay if they were willing to take a pay cut, according to some staff.
The Inquirer’s Sarah Nicell spoke to ER physicians who weren’t offered contracts, physician assistants and doctors who refused the new contract, current employees, patients, and more.
