A group of historic-preservation graduate students from Philadelphia will be traveling to Shanghai to help develop a plan to save some of the city's architectural history.
About a dozen students from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design are to arrive in the Chinese city Sunday. They will be accompanied by Randall Mason, associate professor, and Fon S. Wang, principal of UCI Architects in Philadelphia and herself a Penn Design graduate.
Partnering with colleagues from Tongji University's School of Architecture and Planning, the group will analyze sites in the Tianzifang area of the French Concession and along Hongkou Creek north of the Bund.
The group will be conducting interviews as well as documenting the structures to determine the buildings' historic significance and integrity.
"The astounding pace of development in Shanghai means the loss of important elements of Chinese heritage," Wang said in a release.
