Boy hospitalized after sledding into SUV

An 8-year-old South Jersey boy's sled ride yesterday afternoon wound up at Cooper University Hospital.

As of this morning, his condition had been upgraded to stable, after being in critical condition last night, according to hospital spokeswoman.

The boy was reportedly sledding down a friend's driveway just as a parked SUV began pulling away from the curb, according to Gloucester Township police.

He became trapped under the vehicle and had to freed by emergency units.

"He was wedged underneath to the point where he couldn't free himself," said Greg Karas, who drove an emergency response unit to the scene from the Chews Landings Fire Department.

The SUV, a Jeep Durango, had to be lifted off the child with a heavy jack, said Karas, fire district adminstrator.

"Fortunately," the people at the scene "had the mindset not to yank him out," he added.

The accident happened at about 3:10 p.m. in the 100 block of Ninth Avenue in the Glendora section of Gloucester Township.

According to a Fox 29 News report, the boy, Keith Davis, needed surgery for a broken arm.

Neither the hospital nor police would confirm his identity or the extent of his injuries.

Whether the SUV ran into the child or the child slid underneath was not clear to those arriving after the accident.

"I certainly can't confirm how the poor kid got into the street," Karas said.

Davis lives across the street from the site of the accident, a cousin told Fox News.
