A man riding a scooter who shot an off-duty Philadelphia police officer, sparking an exchange of gunfire after an argument turned violent, was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Nakeem Wilson, 18, of the 700 block of Valley Green Court, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, firearm offenses, and related crimes.

Shortly after 10 p.m. June 8, police said, the officer — whom they did not identify — had just gotten off duty and was driving home in his personal car, a Ford Crown Victoria, still wearing his uniform. As he drove south on the 7600 block of Ridge Avenue in the Upper Roxborough section of the city, the officer spotted a man wearing a dark-colored jacket, black pants, and a black-and-white bandanna driving a scooter recklessly, police said.

As the man on the scooter — later identified as Wilson — rode alongside the passenger side of the officer’s car, the officer rolled down the window so Wilson could see his uniform, police said.

The two began talking, police said, then Wilson pulled a gun from his waistband and fired at the officer. The officer said he heard a popping sound and felt pain on his right side from a graze wound, according to police. The officer fired multiple shots back at Wilson, who lost control of the scooter and fell, then fled in a truck, police said.

Initially, police said the officer was not injured. On Wednesday, they said the officer was grazed on his right side by a gunshot and was treated at Roxborough Hospital and released. It was not known if Wilson was injured.

Philadelphia police declined to say whether the officer had been placed on administrative leave, as is customary when police fire their service weapons, or if he would face any charges in connection with the shooting.

A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office said an investigation was continuing.
