One pedestrian was killed and another injured after a car hit them on Girard Avenue, police say

Two 27-year-old pedestrians were hit by a car Sunday while crossing the street mid-block.

One person has died and another is hospitalized after a car hit the pair while crossing the street mid-block Sunday afternoon, police said.

The incident occurred around 2:02 p.m. on the 1600 block of West Girard Avenue, the Philadelphia Police Department said in a news release.

An early investigation found that a 36-year-old man, who police did not name, was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang eastbound along Girard when a 27-year-old man and 27-year-old woman crossed the street mid-block.

The driver attempted to avoid the woman, swerving into oncoming traffic, but in doing so, hit the man, police said. The woman seemed to have been hit by the car’s front passenger wheel and then the side of the car, police said.

The driver called 911.

The man suffered severe head trauma; he was taken to Temple University Hospital by a Philadelphia Fire Department medic unit, and was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m.

The woman was also taken to Temple and was treated for her injuries and listed in stable condition, police said.

Police are still investigating.
