Delco’s Aunt Mary Pat says the perfect Mother’s Day gift is a smoke and a Coke
Comedian Troy Hendrickson says a little banter, a sloppy cheesesteak, and Philly sports is Mother’s Day done “Delco style.”
For Aunt Mary Pat DiSabatino, Mother’s Day is a moment to spend time with your children, and be prepared for a little letdown.
“I think every Delco mom wants everything, but asks for nothing, and then they’re always disappointed,” said Troy Hendrickson, the comedian behind the viral Delaware County personality.
The Wilmington native created the wigged, red lipstick-donning, and push-up-bra-wearing social media star in 2018 after the Eagles’ Super Bowl win against the New England Patriots, amassing more than 100,000 followers across social media platforms since.
Hendrickson said his alter ego is loosely based on his own mother and other matriarchs of the region.
“A Delco mom smokes and drinks, but she always has your back,” Hendrickson said.
In the years following, Hendrickson has shared videos of Aunt Mary Pat sending prayers to her Philadelphia Eagles (or “Iggles”), recapping her trips to “Floorduh,” and offering her fair share of life advice — like loading up on deodorant this summer so you don’t “smell like an old freaking Italian hoagie.”
With Mother’s Day on Sunday, Hendrickson’s Aunt Mary Pat rattled off a few tips to celebrate the holiday, Delco style.
Limited trips and activities
Hendrickson said there’s no need for fancy activities or planned day trips.
Spare your Delco mom the theatrics. All she really wants, he said, is the typical banter she’s used to on her Sundays. “They are either going to work, or sitting on the porch and talking s—,“ he said.
A simple cheesesteak
While the debate about who has the best cheesesteak in the region can be “contentious,” Hendrick said for Delco moms, the sloppier the better.
“Do mayonnaise, ketchup, cheese, and onions,” he said. “I want it all over my hands, face, and dripping down.”
Valuable family time
Hendrickson said a smoke, a Coke, and some family time is what makes Mother’s Day special in a Delco household.
“I think being with their children, and making sure that they’re celebrating the life that they created is important,” he said. “I think moms in Delco are, like, ‘Even though they’re a–holes, I’m proud of them.’"
Philly sports is king
As for his own Mother’s Day plans, Hendrickson said he’s fulfilling his mom’s only request: Go to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the Sixers try to salvage their playoff hopes against the New York Knicks.
“We’re a full Philly sports family. If they lose, we hate them. If they win, we love them,” he said.
