Investing in pride

In a recent op-ed on the Fox News website, Sen. Dave McCormick discussed how pride in being an American has taken a nosedive. “Only 39% of Americans say they are ‘extremely proud’ to be American,” he points out, and “pride is even lower among younger Americans.” His solution: teach character through stories about Americans acting heroically, such as those aboard United Airlines Flight 93. He bemoans that “too many boys and young men are struggling to find purpose and a path into adulthood.”

The senator might consider that finding a path into adulthood is difficult for young people due to a lack of jobs that pay well, student debt loads, and the rising cost of housing and health insurance. Young people are discouraged because they have trouble envisioning a future that includes buying a home and supporting a family.

But Sen. McCormick doesn’t touch on these realities. Instead, he has steadfastly supported President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill and other policies that give big tax breaks to the wealthiest and undermine the financial security of the middle and working class. He …

Our young people may not have a confident path to adulthood, but it’s not for lack of patriotism. Sen. McCormick, if you invest in the lives of ordinary Americans, young people will respond. And they may even feel a bit more patriotic.

Cleaning house

After reading the recent articles in the paper about Sheriff Rochelle Bilal, for me there is only one action: Write to your City Council member, as I just did, and request that the department gets a clean sweep and that Sheriff Bilal is removed. We have lots of capable people; why are we putting up with this circus? To keep this going only makes City Council and the mayor look inept, and reinforces the opinion of those who think our city government cannot work properly. We can have a good city government if we all demand it.

Ethics of war

Why are we congratulating ourselves on finally exiting Iraq after 23 years? Lest we forget, will someone please explain to me how a president who fussed over using federal monies for embryonic cell research because he felt the taking of innocent life in the hopes of saving others was unethical went on to declare a war based on lies and preside over the killing of 200,000 Iraqi civilians at a cost of $2.8 trillion?
