Alec Asher, a Phillies righthanded starter, was suspended Thursday by Major League Baseball for 80 games after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Asher, 24, is on the team's 40-man roster. He is currently on the disabled list at triple-A Lehigh Valley with a calf injury. He was acquired from Texas in the Cole Hamels trade and had a 9.31 ERA in seven starts last season for the Phillies.

"The Phillies support Major League Baseball's joint prevention and treatment program and are disappointed to hear today's news of Alec's violation," the team said in a statement.
