Chickie's Deli on the market
The building and business are for sale, but the owner intends to relocate in the neighborhood.
A for-sale sign went up the other day outside Chickie's Italian Deli, the hoagie mecca at 1014 Federal St.
"Rare opportunity to purchase a long established business with high quality reputation since 1993 including all good will, business and equipment plus a bi-level 2 bedroom, 2 bath residence, all located in the Italian Market area!" reads the listing. Asking price is $750,000.
But hear this: Owner Henry George isn't really going far.
In the short term, it's business as usual for George and crew, who have racked all kinds of awards since the deli opened in 1993.
George explains that divorce is forcing the sale, but he intends to relocate to a "bigger, better" shop within a block or two. Same ingredients and employees.
"We don't even want to skip a beat," he said, adding that he hopes to keep the Chickie's name.
