Fox29 doesn't renew Billy V's contract

Sports anchor Billy Vargus' last day on the Fox29 schedule is April 29.

Not a good time to be a local TV sportscaster. Notice how sports departments have been shinking -- just as has the time allotted to sports during newscasts.

Fox29 confirmed to me that Billy Vargus' contract was not renewed. His last day at the station will be April 29. Vargus will follow such longtimers as Don Tollefson and Gerald Kolpan out of the door.

Billy V has been working many shifts, including the 10 o'clock show, since Tollefson was released last summer. In a moment of triumph last September, he won the Mid-Atlantic Emmy for best sports anchor, on his seventh try

Vargus, 52, a Temple grad, joined the station in 1997, a few months before the station hired his wife, Good Day's Sue Serio. The two met at WHYY, according to his bio.

He did not return my messages.
