At least 37 people were displaced Saturday after a fire tore through a senior living apartment complex in West Philadelphia.

At least 37 people were displaced Saturday after a fire tore through a senior living apartment complex in West Philadelphia.

Fire officials said crews responded shortly before 1 p.m. to St. Matthew's Manor, located on North 57th Street between Race and Vine streets. The fire was brought under control about 40 minutes later.

It's not yet clear how much damage the building suffered. Authorities said the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.

A spokesman for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania said the organization is assisting at least 37 residents who were displaced. They were being sheltered Saturday afternoon at the St. Matthew AME Church across the street.

Most of the 37 residents were expected to be allowed back into their homes Saturday night, the Red Cross said. In the meantime, volunteers were providing the victims with blankets, foods and beverages as they waited for the building to be cleared.

St. Matthews Manor is listed as a 58-unit subsidized housing facility providing independent living to senior citizens and the disabled.
