A man whose family described him as a Marine veteran was shot dead early Thursday in Olney following what police called an altercation at a bar.

A suspect was taken into custody after he broke into a nearby home and fought with the homeowner and his adult son, police said.

Police identified the victim as Howard White, 47, of the 400 block of Roselyn Street. Relatives who gathered at the scene told TV news crews White was a former Marine who had recently returned from working as an independent contractor in Kuwait.

Police said he was shot at North Fifth and Spencer Streets about 12:55 a.m. following an altercation at a nearby bar.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1 a.m.

After White was shot, a man who was with him gave chase and police quickly arrived at the scene.

Police said the suspect broke into a house on the nearby 6100 block of North Sixth Street, where the homeowner and his son struggled with the man and disarmed him. Police took the man, whose name was not immediately released, into custody.

Witnesses are being questioned by homicide detectives.
