Gov. Corbett signed a bill into law Monday that will create a prescription-drug-monitoring program that officials hope will help curb opioid abuse across the state.

The program will create an electronic database within the state's Department of Health that will maintain a record of drugs prescribed to Pennsylvania patients, according to a statement from Corbett's office.

Experts hope this can prevent patients from abusing prescription drugs by seeking prescriptions from multiple doctors at the same time.

In his statement, Gov. Corbett said the bill would "support individuals who suffer with prescription drug addiction." - Chris Palmer
