La Salle got a late boost for the upcoming season Friday when coach Ashley Howard announced that the NCAA had granted a waiver to sophomore transfer David Beatty, making him immediately eligible to play for the Explorers.

Beatty, who helped Imhotep Charter to the PIAA Class 4A state championship in 2017, transferred to La Salle from the University of South Carolina in May.

Normally, a transfer must sit out a full season before being eligible, but Beatty came to La Salle for family reasons and the NCAA determined the circumstances should not cost him a season of eligibility.

"We are ecstatic that the NCAA approved this waiver," Howard said. "David's proximity to his family was an important factor in his decision to transfer to La Salle. He has already made an impact on our program with his commitment and hard work in practice, and we can't wait for him to suit up for the Explorers this season."

A four-star recruit, Beatty played 29 games for South Carolina last season and averaged 11.8 minutes and 3.0 points per game.

Beatty, a 6-foot-3 combo guard who played at Archbishop Carroll before transferring to Imhotep, had a career-high 16 points in a win over Limestone and scored 13 on 6-for-11 shooting against Temple last November.

The Explorers will open the 2018-19 season Nov. 6 at Temple.
