A SEPTA employee was killed Monday evening when he was struck by a train on the Broad Street Line in the city’s Tioga section, police said.

The incident occurred on the northbound side in the area of the Erie station. The employee was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m.

Police said the employee, identified Tuesday as Darren Monroe, 54, of Lawndale, was with two other workers when the accident occurred.

For about three hours afterward, SEPTA transported Broad Street riders on shuttle buses between the Girard station and the Fern Rock Transportation Center to allow investigators access to the scene.

Subway service resumed shortly after 8 p.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday it would take part in the investigation into the death.
