In the earlier case, Johnson, of Clifford Street near 24th, died at 9:57 p.m. Saturday at Penn-Presbyterian Hospital, where police took him after officers found him about 15 minutes earlier on Mount Vernon Street near 37th in Mantua suffering from several gunshot wounds, said Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman.
In the second case, police found Mercer, of Leonard Street near Cheltenham Avenue, collapsed in his second-floor hallway with a gunshot wound to his hip, O'Brien said. He died at 1:40 a.m. at Temple University Hospital. Investigators believe he was shot outside behind his home and then ran inside, O'Brien said.
