Two weekend murder victims identified

Police identified the victims of two unrelated weekend murders as Maurice Owens, 27, of Tioga, and Troy Smith, 23, of East Mount Airy.

In the earlier case, someone shot Smith, of Fayette Street near Sedgwick, in the back on Hunter Street near 54th in Overbrook just after 1 a.m. Saturday. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene at 1:16 a.m. Another man, 29, found shot in the chest, abdomen, pelvis and thigh in the passenger seat of a Dodge Avenger on Hunter Street near 59th. He remains in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

At 5:25 a.m. yesterday, someone shot Owens, of Venango near 18th, in the back on 31st Street near Cumberland in Strawberry Mansion. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene at 5:40 a.m.

Police reported no suspects or motive in either case.
