Barkley gets first look at offense

Rookie quarterback Matt Barkley said he enjoyed his first day of rookie minicamp Friday, which provided Barkley an onfield introduction to new coach Chip Kelly's offense.

"I love it. It's a new challenge," said Barkley, the ex-USC QB the Eagles traded up to make the first player chosen in the fourth round. "It's a unique terminology; it's like learning a new language in a short time period."

Barkley, who arrived in Philadelphia Thursday, said he hasn't met Michael Vick. None of the vets were around Friday for rookie camp (except nonroster tryout guys), but Barkley said he knows Nick Foles from their Pac 12 college days.

"You come in as a teammate to them, not as a fan," Barkley said. "You come in as someone who is ready to compete against them, at the same time."

Barkley said from what he has heard, Vick and Foles are "outstanding men," but "you come in knowing that you have a job. They're trying to take that job as well. It's competition. That's what competing is all about."

Barkley said he disliked playing against Kelly's Oregon teams because he always felt he was coming on the field after a Ducks score, not after a punt or a turnover.

"You have to act quickly. You have to be a sharp decision-maker. I think that's what coach is looking for," Barkley said

Clearly, Barkley sees himself competing for playing time right away. Asked to revisit the disappointing drama of the draft, he said: "The fact is that I'm here, and I have a shot to play on the field this year."

Barkley said he has no restrictions and has fully recovered from last season's shoulder injury.

"You'll see some similar things" to Oregon's offense, Barkley said, "it's coach Kelly." Reporters so far have not been allowed to watch practice. "We have other ideas and schemes fused in. It's going to be exciting."
