Casino Free jumps into Chinatown/Foxwoods fray

Casino Free Philadelphia asked Mayor Nutter to slow down the process for approving a casino at the Gallery shopping mall in Center City.

Casino Free Philadelphia, the aggressive, politically astute organization that coalesced around opposition to casinos in the city, on Tuesday asserted itself in the debate to move Foxwoods casino from Pennsport to the Gallery at Market East shopping mall in Center City .

Residents of Chinatown , which neighbors The Gallery have already raised their voices against the move; the extent to which the Nutter administration can convince them of the project's merits remains to be seen.

Today Casino Free asked Nutter and Councilman Frank DiCicco to hold off on zoning legislation that would start the approval process for a Foxwoods Casino at the Gallery. DiCicco said he would introduce the Commerical Entertainment District bill on Thursday, saying that recent Supreme Court require the city to act. Casino Free questiosns whether this is the beginning of an ineluctable process that will steamroll Chinatown and pay lip-service to community input."

"All we ask is for the downtown communities to have 6 months. The waterfront communities had 16 months to study the plans and engage land use experts, witnesses and traffic consultants .... If you introduce the CED now, Foxwoods might be able to submit plans to the Planning Commission in a few weeks, if not sooner," Casino Free wrote in its letter, calling the Supreme Court issue a "red herring."
