Carl Gardner of the Coasters, RIP

Carl Gardner may not have been a household name, but The Coasters, the doo-wop / R & B band that the 83 year old vocalist who died on Sunday sanfg lead for, had a long string of instantly recognizable, inimitable hits in the late 1950s. The went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller wrote the funny, enduring novelty songs they sang, many of which featured King Curtis' wailing saxophone, like "Poison Ivy" (which was "gonna take an ocean / of Calamine Lotion" to get rid of), and "Yakety Yak," and "Little Egypt" and "Searchin'" and "Young Blood" and "Charlie Brown," and more. Gardner's obit is here. "Along Came Jones" is below.
