Phillies sign McGowan

The Phillies have signed right-hander Dustin McGowan to a one-year major league contract.

The 33-year-old McGowan was released last week by the Los Angeles Dodgers after recording a 6.75 ERA in seven spring training appearances.

Before that he was with the Toronto Blue Jays organization, which he joined after being the 33rd overall player selected in the June 2000 draft.

McGowan began last season in the Blue Jays' starting rotation, going 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA in eight starts before being converted to a reliever in May. He had a 3.45 ERA in 45 relief appearances last year, holding opponents to a .215 average.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound McGowan has a career 4.57 ERA in 158 games (68 starts).
