A 42-year-old Willingboro woman has been charged with fatally beating her husband with a fire extinguisher Monday, authorities said Tuesday.

Laciana Tinsley struck her husband, Douglas Tinsley, 74,  several times with the extinguisher inside their home on the first block of Hancock Lane, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The wife was taken into custody in the home and was charged Monday with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. The motive for the assault was still being investigated, the Prosecutor's Office said.

Cedric Edwards, Laciana Tinsley's public defender, said Tuesday in a brief appearance in Superior Court in Mount Holly that she struck her husband with the extinguisher because he was smothering her, according to NJ.com.

Tinsley was being held at the Burlington County Jail, and a detention hearing is scheduled for Friday in Mount Holly.
