CLEARWATER, Fla. — When the pain in Cody Asche's rib cage did not subside, the Phillies ordered an MRI. That exam showed a Grade 1 strain, and Asche has been instructed to stop all hitting activities.
CLEARWATER, Fla. — When the pain in Cody Asche's rib cage did not subside, the Phillies ordered an MRI. That exam showed a Grade 1 strain, and Asche has been instructed to stop all hitting activities.
There is no timetable for his return, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.
"I'm hoping tomorrow he feels better," Mackanin said. "I don't know. These things are funny."
Asche was injured in late February and has not improved since.
The Phillies are in a precarious position when it comes to outfield depth. Odubel Herrera, Peter Bourjos and Tyler Goeddel appear to be the starters. If Asche is not ready in three weeks, the team might have to add from the outside. The Phillies hold the top waiver-claim priority. There will be cuts from other teams later this month that could provide an upgrade.
If not, Darnell Sweeney, David Lough and Cedric Hunter are internal options. Mackanin also mentioned Emmanuel Burris and Ryan Jackson, two infielders, as possible bench outfielders. Burriss, 31, has played in five major-league games over the last three seasons. Jackson, 27, is a veteran of 42 games.
