Cops: He leaps, brawls, steals car, then is shot
The first brisk weekend of the fall was also a particularly violent one on the streets of Philadelphia. The first brisk weekend of the fall was also a particularly violent one on the streets of Philadelphia.
Eight people were hospitalized after five separate shootings this weekend, including a man who suffered multiple gunshot wounds after allegedly brawling with cops, then stealing a patrol car and dragging an officer 50 feet in Hunting Park Saturday morning.
About 8:15 a.m., 39th District cops responded to a call of a domestic dispute at 22nd Street near Hunting Park Avenue, said Sgt. Gary Ferguson of Northwest Detectives.
There they found Mahlon Cobb, 26, assaulting his 30-year-old ex-girlfriend, Ferguson said. When police tried to arrest him, Cobb dove headfirst out of a second-floor window into an alleyway and fled down Tioga Street, he said.
Police encountered him again at 23rd and Tioga streets, where police say Cobb punched and kicked one cop to the ground, then tried to steal his gun.
Two other police officers tried to subdue him, but were unsuccessful, Ferguson said.
He said Cobb then jumped onto the hood of a patrol car and slid into the driver's seat and took off. A cop tried to stop him, but was dragged 50 feet before other officers opened fire. Cobb was shot in the abdomen, hip, thigh and buttocks.
Cobb was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition. He has been charged with aggravated assault and other offenses. The police officer suffered minor injuries.
Later that day, about 7:15 p.m., a delivery man for Bo Wah Chinese restaurant in the city's Elmwood section was shot once in the chest in his car while making a delivery on Saybrook Avenue near 69th Street in Southwest Philadelphia.
Police have not confirmed robbery as a motive, but a sergeant with the city's Southwest Detectives said "most of the time, that's what it comes down to."
The delivery man, said to be in his 30s, drove himself back to Bo Wah, were he collapsed on the floor, according to Officer Jillian Russell, police spokeswoman.
He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania by medics, where he remained last night in critical but stable condition, Russell said.
About three hours later, a 15-year-old boy was shot once in the back and once in the shoulder on Wallace Street near 12th, in Spring Garden, according to police. He remained in stable condition at Hahnemann University Hospital.
Police haven't released information on any suspects in either case.
Authorities also are still searching for motives and suspects in two double shootings yesterday morning that injured two men and two women.
The first took place about 1:50 a.m. at J Street and Lycoming in the city's Juniata Park section. A 19-year-old woman who was shot once in the left arm remains in stable condition at Temple University Hospital and a 24-year-old man who was shot once in the back was in critical condition at Temple.
About 2:45 a.m. at 55th and Poplar streets, in the Carroll Park section of the city, an 18-year-old woman was shot once in the buttocks and a 27-year-old man was shot once in the neck. The woman was in critical condition at HUP and the man was in critical condition at Lankenau Hospital, Russell said. *
