Philly man arrested in Virginia, charged with Kensington slaying
A 29-year-old Overbrook man who allegedly fled the city after a September 2016 killing in Kensington was captured in Virginia last month and has been brought back to Philadelphia to face murder charges, according to police.
Karl Howard, 29, was arrested Jan. 17 in the cubby hole of a closet in a home in Norfolk after a standoff with local police and the U.S. Marshals Service, the marshals said in a news release.
On Monday, according to Philadelphia police, Howard, of the 800 block of North 65th Street, was extradited from the Norfolk city jail to face counts of murder and related charges for allegedly participating in the shooting death of Maului Lewis, 45, on the 3100 block of Kensington Avenue on Sept. 4.
Police released few details about the crime or Howard's involvement, but said it resulted from an argument. The marshals said an arrest warrant had been issued for Howard on Sept. 23.
In January, after police learned Howard was hiding out in Hampton Roads, officers with the Marshals Service and the Norfolk Fugitive Unit approached a house in Norfolk where they suspected Howard to be living, according to the marshals.
Howard refused to come outside, but was found in a cubby hole above a bedroom closet, where he allegedly provided a fake name to investigators, the Marshals said.
Howard - who in 2008 was convicted of robbery and related counts, according to court records - was taken into custody without incident and held in Norfolk while he waited to be extradited, the marshals said.
