the city's first two this year

While Philadelphia police deal with a homicide rate in 2007 that is running at a pace of more than one a day, Camden, once designated the most dangerous city in the country, just has seen its first two killings of the year.

The victims, both men, were found riddled with bullets Thursday inside a car that had flipped over after hitting a tree. Autopsies done on Alfredo A. Martinez, 21, and Jesse Hernandez, 20, both of Camden, found that they both died of multiple gunshot wounds, acting Camden County Prosecutor Joshua M. Ottenberg said in a written statement yesterday.

In every year since at least 1980 - the earliest for which records are easily accessible - Camden had its first killing before March 8.

Overall, gamblers lost $378.3 million in Atlantic City in February, down 4.8 percent from the $394.5 million the casinos took in during January.
