Forecasters: More snow Saturday, frigid temps in Philly through next week

The snow and frigid air aren't going away soon -- forecasters say more snow for the Philadelphia region is likely Saturday, and the temperature will rise above freezing just one day in the next week.

That warm up comes Monday, the National Weather Service says, when the high is forecasted to reach 36 degrees.

The days before and after that will be colder -- some days, significantly -- due to arctic high pressure systems, the weather service says.

The expected highs for the weekend and the rest of the next week are: 19 degrees today, 32 on Saturday, 23 on Sunday, 19 on Tuesday, 18 on Wednesday and 26 on Thursday.

The cold temperatures this week have been blamed for at least four deaths in the Philadelphia area. Tuesday night, the temperature dropped to 14 degrees. Wednesday's high was only 16 degrees, and the mercury climbed to just 22 degrees Thursday.

And after Tuesday's record-setting snowfall, more of the white stuff is likely on the way Saturday. The weather service says one to two inches is expected for most of the Philadelphia area, with some parts of the northwestern suburbs seeing two to four inches.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for eastern Chester, western Montgomery and upper Bucks counties from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The snow is expected to hit the area from late morning through the afternoon.

The cold temperatures mean that any snow that falls will stick, forecasters say.

There's another slight possibility of snow Sunday night.

The weather service says the average temperature for January at Philadelphia International Airport is projected to be around 28.1 degrees -- 4.8 degrees below normal, and the coldest average mark for January since 2004. That year, the average temperature for the month was 26.1 degrees.
