Taking to Web in search of gasoline deals
Want the cheapest gas around? Unless you want to go all the way to Toms River or North Jersey, you couldn't top the $3.37 for a gallon of regular yesterday at a Pennsauken Wawa (Route 73 and Remington Road) or a Burlington Hess (Mount Holly and Cadillac Roads).
That's according to several Gas Buddy Web sites that cover Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. It's possible that even better deals were out there, since these reports depend on spotters trying to keep up with fluctuations.
Those two South Jersey stations were even charging less than the Sunocos on the New Jersey Turnpike, which recently have become magnets for bargain-hunters.
Turnpike stations can alter prices only once a week - on Fridays - so as stations elsewhere jack up rates, more consumers will pay tolls to fill their tanks.
Two weekends ago, "we ended up with lines that made it look like the OPEC crisis" of the 1970s, according to spokesman Joe Orlando. "There was clearly a lot of traffic coming through just for the gas prices."
Yesterday, several of those Sunocos charged $3.39 - the same as about two dozen other South Jersey stations, including seven on Route 73 in Maple Shade.
Turnpike travelers, take note: Today you'll see a 'pike hike of a dime. According to Orlando, the service-plaza Sunocos can charge 3 cents above the state average - which calculates out to $3.49 a gallon for regular, $3.63 for midgrade gas, and $3.73 for premium.
Yesterday's price was still cheaper than any gas in Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania suburbs, where the best you could do was $3.49 at the Willow Grove Sam's Club or the Frankford and Tyson Universal in Northeast Philadelphia, according to www.pennsylvaniagasprices.com.
In northern Delaware, the lowest price for regular was $3.51 at the Prices Corner Valero - unless you're a member of BJ's Wholesale Club, where gas was $3.49 in New Castle.
You could have done a lot worse, of course - like the Narberth Lukoil that charged $3.95, according to www.phillygasprices.com.
