How better to capture the spirit and variety of South Jersey artists than through the lenses of regional photographers?

A one-of-a-kind exhibit, "Clique: South Jersey Artists by South Jersey Photographers," will be on display at the Perkins Center for the Arts in Collingswood through May 5. A free reception open to the public will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A second exhibit of "Clique" will be held from Sept. 16 through Oct. 18 at the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville. A reception will be held Sept. 16.

"Clique" is being supported by the ArtPride New Jersey Foundation and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts along with ArtC, a South Jersey artists network and support organization.

The exhibit is the brainchild of artist Bill Horin, ArtC's founder and creative director.

ArtPride spokeswoman Korin Rife said Horin brought the idea to her organization and the state council.

"We loved it," Rife said.

The eight photographers selected to take part in the project are among the region's most accomplished, Rife said. The 16 artists featured in the exhibit were selected as well.

The photographers of "Clique" are Nastassia Davis of Atlantic City; Susan Gietka of Hammonton; Steven Greer of Lumberton; Magdalena Kernan of Somers Point; Gary Mattie of Cherry Hill; Cliff Mautner of Haddonfield; David Todd McCarty of Cape May Court House; and Frank Weiss of Wildwood Crest.

The artists represent eight southern counties and a range of genres.

They are metal sculptor Bill Clark and illustrator E.B. Lewis of Atlantic County; fine-art photographer Albert Horner and singer/songwriter Ginger Coyle of Burlington County; painter William Butler, painter Soraida Martinez, playwright Joseph Paprzycki, and flautist Megan Emigh of Camden County; painters Victor Grasso and Stan Sperlak of Cape May County; ceramist Jacqueline Sandro and choreographer Kimberly Chapman of Cumberland County; sculptor Katherine Stanek and glass artist Paul Stankard of Gloucester County; mixed-media artist Joanie Gagnon San Chirico of Ocean County; and sculptor Molly Sanger Carpenter of Salem County.

Thursday's reception will be an opportunity to meet some of artists and photographers. The evening's fare will be provided by the Tortilla Press, a Collingswood eatery. Live entertainment will be provided by South Jersey singer/songwriter and guitarist Jeff Schwachter.

The exhibit's hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at the Perkins Center, 30 Irvin Ave., Collingswood.
