The $38.8 billion generated by tourism in 2008 compares with record revenue of $39.5 billion the year before.
Nevertheless, officials say the figures are solid in the face of the weakened economy, and they're optimistic about 2009.
Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells said yesterday that coastal communities were reporting strong summer rental activity. She said New Jersey's proximity to major population centers makes it an economical option for cost-conscious vacationers.
Tourism generated $7.7 billion in federal, state, and tax revenue last year, equivalent to more than $1,400 for every New Jersey household. The industry employs more than 440,000 people directly or indirectly. - AP
