Council bill would bar DROP for elected officials

A City Council committee approved legislation yesterday that would bar any more elected officials from participating in the city's Deferred Retirement Option Plan, or DROP.

A City Council committee approved legislation yesterday that would bar any more elected officials from participating in the city's Deferred Retirement Option Plan, or DROP.

Councilman Bill Green, chair of Council's Labor and Civil Service Committee, said he sponsored the bill because he "felt it was wrong for an elected official to set an example where they are taking hundreds of thousands of dollars."

DROP allows city employees to pick a retirement date and let their benefits grow in a special account. Seven members of Council already have enrolled and Green said his legislation would not affect them because state law prohibited it. Council could consider the measure as early as next week. - Miriam Hill
