Mormon Temple striking and surprising
I would like to thank the leaders of the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple for allowing nonbelievers to tour their magnificent new building on Vine Street ("Mormon temple dedicated in Philadelphia," Philly.com, Sept. 19). I am not a Mormon and will never be, but the experience of the tour will leave lasting memories. The Federalist-style building near Logan Square is so similar and dissimilar to what we know as to be unnerving.
Arriving for a public tour offered before the Sept. 18 dedication (the temple is restricted to Mormons in good standing with the church), I saw a church with steeples and statues but entered to find an exceptional meeting complex that seems fitting for a Fortune 500 headquarters and a five-star hotel.
The attention to detail and ultra-superior workmanship was from another time. Every molding joint, stained-glass window lead, and floor tile showed perfect craftsmanship of a caliber that is difficult to achieve, regardless of the amount spent.
The tour guides were exceptionally courteous and knowledgeable about the faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The tours were wonderfully organized and an amazing opportunity to learn.
