Rains threaten the Phillies ‘Field of Dreams’ game Thursday night
Friday might be a better alternative, a forecaster said.
The Phillies might feel right at home Thursday when they are scheduled to play the Minnesota Twins in the “Field of Dreams” game in Dyersville, Iowa.
The weather out there is expected to have more than a dash of Philadelphia-style August flavor, with mugginess and rains during the day that could linger into game time, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Philly time.
“We’re tracing a potential band of storms that will set up near the ‘Field of Dreams’ Thursday evening,” said Connor DeLaune, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Davenport, Iowa.
“There probably will be a few isolated lightning strikes,” he added.
But this caveat might sound familiar: The timing and location of any storms remain uncertain, a forecast problem as challenging in northeastern Iowa as it is in southeastern Pennsylvania.
John Feerick, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc. and a die-hard Phillies fan, said it is possible the rains will back off during the evening.
“There may be enough of a break where they could get the game in,” he said.
That said, the teams may be better off waiting until Friday, which “looks a lot better.”
While no steady rain is expected Friday, Feerick added that he could not rule out that Philly special — a pop-up thunderstorm.
