Eagles edge rusher Jonathan Greenard practices Wednesday, status for Sunday still in question
Greenard signed a four-year, $100 million contract that includes $50 million guaranteed after the team traded for him this offseason.
The Eagles open their season against the Commanders this Sunday. Will star edge rusher Johnathan Greenard — who missed all of camp with a pectoral injury — be ready for it?
Coach Nick Sirianni, speaking in a news conference Wednesday, said “we’ll see” when asked about his status.
“We’ll see where that is by the end of the week,” Sirianni said.
Greenard later appeared in full practice gear for the stretching period and at the start of individual drills open to the media. The official injury report will be revealed later on Wednesday.
Greenard, 29, was not on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list when general manager Howie Roseman finalized the 53-man roster last week — a positive sign given that PUP status would have forced Greenard to miss at least the first four games of the season. Roseman offered a positive update on Greenard, who suffered the pectoral strain during a workout ahead of camp, on Aug. 31.
“Us not having him on PUP and missing time here shows that we anticipate him playing sooner rather than later,” Roseman said. “What that timetable is, again, we’ll keep close to the vest. The guy’s a tremendous football player. He’s got a tremendous ability to affect the quarterback. He’s going to come back in tremendous shape. I think that you saw the D-Line’s obviously a position of emphasis for us always.
“The guy fits what we do. Yeah, there’ll be some things that will be a little bit different and we’ll get him up to speed, but we expect him to have a high impact on this team this season for all accounts of what he’s done and how he works and how he leads, he’s as advertised. We’re excited to have him.”
The Eagles traded third-round picks in 2026 and 2027 for Greenard on April 24. He then signed a four-year, $100 million contract that includes $50 million guaranteed. They acquired him to fill the void left by Jaelan Phillips, who signed with the Carolina Panthers in free agency.
Greenard was limited to 12 games with the Minnesota Vikings last season due to a left shoulder injury. He had surgery this past offseason.
Look for Jalyx Hunt — who arguably had the best training camp of any Eagles player — to fill Greenard’s role atop the depth chart if he doesn’t play. Nolan Smith, Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa round out the Eagles’ deep edge rusher room.
