Today’s the day to celebrate Philly’s most iconic sandwich: the cheesesteak.

The sandwich is a symbol for the City of Brotherly Love. What it represents has changed throughout its near-century of existence, reflected in the varieties found throughout the city.

This National Cheesesteak Day is a good opportunity to show some love for the meaty icon.

If you’re looking for the best, we have a guide to 23 beef cheesesteaks with crusty seeded rolls and endless rivers of molten Cooper Sharp, updated guides to meat-free and other alt steaks, and a weekly cheesesteak column with all the hot steaks.

Headed to CBP this Thursday? Bring your own cheesesteak and save the upcharge. Inquirer reporter Tommy Rowan has tips and spots to successfully BYO for opening day against the Texas Rangers.

But keep in mind: it might not be best — Rowan found out players get better steaks at the visiting clubhouse than the rest of us at Citizens Bank Park, and maybe all of Philly.

There are also plenty of events dedicated to the sandwich happening around town.

Take the World’s Longest Line of Cheesesteaks event at the Philadelphia International Airport. Inside the Terminal B/C Connector, from 9 a.m. to noon, the airport attempted to set a Guinness World Record for the “Longest Line of Cheesesteaks” as part of PHL Food and Shops’ annual Cheesesteak Week celebration.

Cheesesteak Week at the airport runs from March 23 to 27. Special creations are available at various restaurant vendors, including a chicken Parm cheesesteak at Chickie’s and Pete’s, a salmon “cheesesteak” at Oyster House in B/C Connector, and a chicken shawarma cheesesteak at Bud & Marilyn’s in Terminal C.

Or head to 2118 Cottman Avenue for Metro by T-Mobile’s “Best Cheesesteak in Philly” showdown. From 4 to 6 p.m., 10 local cheesesteaks spots will compete at Metro’s Cottman Ave location for the title of Ultimate Cheesesteak Champion and a $1,000 prize. Attendees can sample, vote, and help crown a fan-favorite champion.

Restaurants include Del Rossi’s, Skinny Joey’s, Pat’s King of Steaks, Woodrow’s, Cafe Carmela, Campo’s Philly Cheesesteak, Cleaver’s, Stella’s, Verona Pizza, LaNova, and Lucatelli’s. The event will be hosted by Roxy Romeo from Power 99 Radio. Expect music, giveaways, and an appearance by Philly Food Fanatic.
