Police have determined that the bones found by hikers in Upper Providence Township last week are deer bones, not human remains as previously thought , state police said Sunday.

Two people out for a hike in Ridley Creek State Park discovered the remains around 12:30 p.m. Friday and called 911.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner’s Office initially said that the remains were human. State police became involved in the investigation because the bones were found in a state park.

On Sunday, officials from state and local police departments and the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources searched the park for more remains, state police said.

The medical examiner’s office notified state and local and state police that the remains belonged to a deer at around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

No additional remains were found in the search.

The investigation is closed and all traffic detours around the park have ended, state police said.
