‘Idol’ results: Sky’s the limits

Four remain after surprise elimination

Is this the best season of American Idol ever? If you answered yes, you're correct. We'll tell you what you've won in just a moment. But first the results.

With a handful of contestants remaining, the bottom two came down to Hollie and Skylar, a tandem which took a large Idol voting segment by surprise (i.e., that portion with functioning ears). But the results have been rather volatile all season. And in the end…

Shocked? Skylar was. And I think Jennifer got the wetsies.

Personally I think it's safe to start lettering up your posterboards for the finals in three weeks. It seems clear to me it's going to be Joshua vs Phillip.

Just to fill out the hour, we got two performances from Coldplay. (Is it just me or was Chris Martin's manner subtly condescending?) And Idol royalty, Carrie Underwood, returned to unveil her new single, "Blown Away". (Again, my imagination or did she seem out of her element and uncomfortable with the wind machines?)

Back to our opening question. It is official. The judges decreed it over and over again last night: "The Top 5 has never been better than this." Have you really forgotten Danny Gokey this soon? For shame.
