Playlist: Kurt Vile, and his influences

From Spacemen 3 to John Fahey to "Wakin On A Pretty Day."

A few weeks back, I spent a fine spring morning drinking coffee and talking about music with Philly rocker Kurt Vile, whose fifth album, Wakin' On A Pretty Daze, came out last month.

The feature story that came out of that conversation ran in the Sunday Inquirer A & E section. If you punch in the promo code R55Q on Inquirer.com, you can read that here.

While talking about his own music, Vile mentioned a lot of other bands, some that he discovered through his father's record collection, like Creedence Clearwater Revival, and others that he picked up on his own, like guitarist John Fahey or psych rockers Spacemen 3.

The Spotify playlist that you can stream below is a mix of music by Vile himself, and an assortment of the musicians like Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Randy California whose names he dropped at the Rocket Cat Cafe in Kensington. Vile and his band the Violators play the Non-Comm convention at the World Cafe Live on May 15 and at Union Transfer on May 18.
