Ex-treasurer of S. Jersey youth football league indicted on theft charge

A former treasurer for a South Jersey youth football league has been indicted on charges that he embezzled more than $56,000 from the league, authorities announced Thursday.

Michael DiFlorio, 49, of Williamstown, Gloucester County, was indicted Wednesday by a state grand jury on a charge of third-degree theft by deception.

Between July 2014 and June 2016, DiFlorio  stole $56,777 from the South Jersey Elite Invitational Youth Football League, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office said in a news release.

DiFlorio withdrew cash and wrote checks out of the league fund, mostly for his personal benefit, prosecutors said. Among the thefts alleged was more than $14,000 in cash generated by the league's 2015 championship game, prosecutors said.

If convicted, DiFlorio could face three to five years in state prison.
