Harry Gross: Casino is taking all from 63-year-old
DEAR HARRY: I want to complain about SugarHouse Casino. I know that no one forces me to go there, but I go because it's close to where I live. I am 63 years old, and I have lost virtually all my money. Sometimes, I can lose $1,100 or $1,200 in a month.
DEAR HARRY: I want to complain about SugarHouse Casino. I know that no one forces me to go there, but I go because it's close to where I live. I am 63 years old, and I have lost virtually all my money. Sometimes, I can lose $1,100 or $1,200 in a month. It's so bad that now my house is in foreclosure. Now they tell me I don't have enough points to get free food. They play the music so loud that I can't think, and they won't turn it down. A lot of people are in the same spot as I am. We all go there seven days a week because we like each other. What should I do?
WHAT HARRY SAYS: You are hooked on gambling, and your friendships are helping it along. It has become an addiction. You are letting this gambling control your life. Help is available through Gamblers Anonymous, at 215-468-1991. Your friends should join you in going for help. I don't know what considerations go into making a decision for the location of a casino, but I'd be surprised if a major consideration were not the nature and habits of nearby residents. You can start to break your habit by arranging to meet your friends elsewhere: a senior center, a restaurant, a library. Good luck.
