Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won the Cannes Film Festival's top prize yesterday with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a harrowing portrait of an illegal abortion in Communist-era Romania. The grand prize, considered the festival's No. 2 award, went to Japanese director Naomi Kawase's Mogari No Mori (The Mourning Forest), a movie about a retirement-home resident and a caretaker struggling to overcome loss. Best director went to American painter-director Julian Schnabel for his French-language film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

'Pirates' takes the weekend

Shrek the Third finished in second place this weekend, with sales of $51 million, followed by Spider-Man with $13.7 million ($303 million since it debuted). The horror film Bug came in fourth place with $3.3 million, box-office tracker Media By Numbers reported yesterday.

Lohan faces DUI charges

Lindsay Lohan

was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after her convertible struck a curb, and investigators found what they believe to be cocaine at the scene, Beverly Hills police said.

Lohan, 20, and two other people were in her 2005 Mercedes SL-65 when it crashed on Sunset Boulevard around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. It appeared the actress had been speeding, Lt. Mitch McCann said.

Lohan, who spent time at a rehabilitation center this year, was treated for minor injuries, but the two other people were not hurt, McCann said. In addition to misdemeanor DUI charges, Lohan could face felony charges, McCann said.
