Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Philly does MLK day better than the rest. This we know. Monday, the city's official King Day of Service focuses on the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. Once again, Girard College (2101 College Ave., mlkdayofservice.org) will be the hub, with a book drive, civil-rights workshop, box-able essentials and the Philadelphia Orchestra's 24th annual concert in Girard Chapel (1 p.m., free, philorch.org).
Other options: Donate school supplies at the home of the People Paper (801 Market, 9 a.m.-5 p.m, today-Friday). Help install a mural, take part in a basketball tournament and more, at Martin Luther King Rec Center (2101 W. Cecil B. Moore Ave., 9 a.m.-3 p.m., free, myphillyrising.com).
Explore the African American Museum (701 Arch St., 11 a.m.-5 p.m., free, aampmuseum.org), donate food to Philabundance, take part in service projects and be entertained at a celebration of community. Head to Germantown's Fair Hill Burial Ground (2901 Germantown Ave., 10 a.m.-noon, free, historicfairhill.org), for a five-acre outdoor cleanup, historic Underground Railroad tour, hot cocoa and a bonfire.
Get started early: They're doing MLK three days at Eastern State Penitentiary (2027 Fairmount Ave., 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. tomorrow-Monday, events free, admission for tours, easternstate.org).
