Pa. Supreme Court rejects slots lawsuit
The state Supreme Court says a lawsuit seeking to throw out the state slot-machine gambling law has no merit.
HARRISBURG - The state Supreme Court says a lawsuit seeking to throw out the state slot-machine gambling law has no merit.
The suit was filed last year by casino opponents who argued that the law did not give enough guidance to state gambling regulators on how to gauge the social impact of casinos.
That is one of the criteria that Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board members must use when deciding between competitive applications for a slots license.
But the court's chief justice, Ralph Cappy, wrote that the Legislature is not required to micromanage the agencies it creates.
And he said there is nothing in the constitution that requires an exhaustive definition of a social effect.
