New Montco commisioners sworn in today

A new era in Montgomery County government will begin this morning with the swearing in of the winners from the November general election.

Jim Matthews and Bruce Castor, the feuding Republicans chosen by voters for the board of county commissioners, will take the oath of office – as will Democrat Joe Hoeffel, who rounds out the three-member board.

The new commissioners are scheduled to meet for the first time at 2 p.m. to elect a chairman and vice chairman among the three of them.

All attention will be on whether Matthews and Hoeffel live up to a pact they made last month to form a Republican-Democratic leadership team and leave Castor in the cold. Normally, two members of the same party would form a ruling alliance, but Matthews and Castor weren't normal running mates. They ran essentially separate campaigns while often sniping at each other.

The election brought other change in the Norristown courthouse, where Democrats for the first time in decades captured several row offices from Republicans.

The new officers to be sworn in today at Norristown Area High School include Democrat Ann Thornburg Weiss as Clerk of Courts, Democrat Diane Morgan as controller, Democrat Walter I. Hofman as coroner, Republican Risa Vetri Ferman as district attorney, Republican Nancy J. Becker as recorder of deeds, Democrat D. Bruce Hanes as sheriff and Republican Garrett D. Page as treasurer.
